Another Texas Governor For President - Meet Rick Perry

By Scott Reynolds

Contingent upon what month it is when you are looking at this, you're possibly learning about Rick Perry in dribs and drabs - or he's launched his run for the Presidency and the airwaves are flooded with discussions of this interesting brand-new prospect.

Regardless, if you would like to get up-to-speed concerning who he is and exactly where he got his start, here's an at-a-glance intro that will get you up-to-speed in a few twitches of a Texas longhorn's tail.

Childhood & Secondary Education Days

Rick Perry came into this world March 4, 1950 in Paint Creek, Haskell Country Texas. His father Joseph Perry and mom Amelia Holt Perry were ranchers and cotton growers. His dad was an involved Texas Democrat, commissioner of the school board in Haskell County plus a frequent participant on the school board on its own.

He graduated in 1968 from Paint Creek high school and left for Texas A&M University. Whilst attending university, he worked on and off as a publication salesperson knocking on doorways and discovering how to build relationships with people coming from all parts of society. He graduated from the Texas A&M Animal Science program in 1972.

Armed Forces Service

Signing up for the Air Force directly from college, Rick Perry went through flight training and was sent to fly the big C-130 "Hercules" transport aeroplanes in the s, European countries plus the Middle East.

He attained the ranking of Captain and left the military in 1977, coming back home to work the familial cotton acerage with his dad.

Romantic Relationship

After coming back home from the armed forces, in 1982 Perry wed Anita Thigpen, a childhood years crush he'd known since primary school. Anita had attained a diploma in nursing from West Texas State University. The two have been married just-about 30 years now.

Service in Politics

Perry launched his experience in state politics some 26 years ago when he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives.

He was originally a Democrat - although a "Texas Democrat" - and also ran Al Gore's campaign in Texas during the 1988 primaries. He moved sides and registered with the Republican Party in 1989, stating he had "come to his senses."

He went on to win a run for Texas Agricultural Commissioner in 1990, where he advocated the sale of Texas farm goods in various other states and countries overseas. He was reelected Agricultural Commissioner in 1994.

Then he ran successfully for Lieutenant Governor in 1998. When George W. Bush, then Governor of Texas, resigned to take up the office of Chief Executive of the US in 2000, Perry ascended to the office of Texas Governor.

He began the first comprehensive campaign for Governor in 2002 and nailed it one more time. He ran for a second time and gained reelection in 2006. After that once more in 2010. A fiscal and cultural conservative, he is now the longest serving Governor of Texas using an excellent history of pro-business and job producing policies. The fact is that, his policies in Texas are the reason for just-about 50 % the United States job expansion over the past 10 years.
