Analyzing What Was Accomplished During The Copenhagen Climate Change Summit

By Forrest Weitzman

Recently there was a summit in Copenhagen, Denmark that was meant to discuss a resolution that needed to be made to deal with the consequences of carbon emissions and climate change. 192 nations came together to try to provide a solution to the issue and that was quite the event. Can you imagine the effort and will-power of having 192 countries all together making an attempt to come up with a plan that requires spending untold billions of dollars and trying to get everybody to agree on how best to spend it?

Go green with retread tires.

There had been one point during the summit where some of the developing nations all around the globe walked out of the negotiations because they felt that their interests were not being addressed as much as the larger, more developed states. They eventually came back to the table however it definitely made things more difficult to get an agreement.

Climate change activists from all over the world also converged on Copenhagen during the conference and they demonstrated and requested action each day of the summit. A lot of them were arrested for being rather too pushy and there were a lot of scuffles with the police throughout the duration of the event. Many of us feel very passionate about the topic of planetary warming and that is understandable.

Climate change threatens our existence on this planet if you recognise all the issues that it presents to us. When you couple that with world figures who are hesitant to change, it becomes comprehensible that folks who feel strongly about this could do everything that they can to insure that progress is made.

The majority of those folks were looking for a legally binding agreement to come out of this summit, but that was not accomplished. Unhappily agreement could not be reached between all the countries. The US did put forth what came to be called the Copenhagen Accord that looks like it's going to be the center piece of the process going forward.

Some leaders hailed this as a good start, while some of the others are calling it a "toothless failure." The deal was primarily worked out between the US, China, and a handful of other larger more developed states. President Barak Obama made an appearance at the meeting, but that was about it. He came in and worked with some of the other nations and had a resolution drafted. That was just about it. Then the summit agreed to recognise the deal, but there wasn't a vote or anything close to a contractually binding agreement.

It's unfortunate to see that when we have got some real problems that we are facing in the world that might affect the existence of humans on this planet in the not-too-distant future and politicians seem to be busy playing mind games and attempting to score points over other nations. The way this conference worked, the biggest and most powerful states in the world came in and imposed their will on the rest of the world and then walked out. This kind of behaviour isn't going to resolve any of the problems on the planet. We cannot talk our way out of the situation that we have with planetary warming.
