Ray Martin: Creator Of 60 Minutes Australia And Award Winning Journalistic Veteran

By Minnie Lowery

Ray Martin was born in the year 1944, New South Wales, Australia. His stellar career as a journalist began when he was appointed as the North American correspondent for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in 1969. At the Nine Network, he has been a fixture of this network for over 30 years. During his tenure he has hosted many hit shows, including Midday with Ray Martin, A Current Affair, 60 Minutes, as well as, many top-rated news and entertainment specials.

The Nine Network has been one of the top watched television stations in Australia for 50 years. As Nine's Senior Correspondent, he has interviewed some of the most famous people on the planet and covered some of Australia's most important news stories. He has brought us interviews with, such names as, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman and covered world changing events, such as the Indonesian tsunami.

Throughout decades, this outstanding journalist has brought up world sporting and political events and wars, as well as, regional current events on radio and TV. He won many awards for this work that include 5 Golden Logie Awards, several Peoples Choice awards, a prestigious Centenary Medal, and numerous entertainment awards for his long running news/entertainment shows and specials.

In recent years, Ray Martin has become a more controversial figure. A public scuffle with a well-known Australian documentary maker, published articles where he criticized politicians and a few famous Aussies. Then last year, he led a push to replace the Australian flag on the eve of the country's national day.

Debate about the flag was most likely triggered by Prince William's visit in January of 2010. Although the British monarch was greeted warmly and heartily, the visit couldn't help but ignite the long standing argument for Australia to become a republic.

Perhaps because of several public blunders over the last few years, Martin is not as popular as he once was. A running joke in Australia has been the question of his hair. The slick and helmet-like hairstyle has raised questions about the possibility of it being a wig. This observation has repeatedly been satirized on the popular comedy show Full Frontal.
