The Complete Political History Of Israel

By Bruce Bosshard

Political History of Israel began after it was declared an independent state in 1948 and became a home for Jews who were previously being persecuted in many parts of the world especially Europe. Through the Zionist movement which worked towards obtaining a permanent homeland for the Jews they were able to establish the state of Israel by gaining International support.

After independence David Ben-Gurion became the prime minister for 15 years and the Government was headed by the Labor Party for 29 years. Withing this period the country experienced a high growth rate in both population and economy.Levi Eshkol succeeded David in 1963 and formed the Government with the Herut movement. During this time the Six day War broke out which was against Egypt and Palestine. After Levi died in 1969 Golda Meir took over but when the Yom Kippur War broke out in 1973 he resigned.

The next government was headed in 1974 by Yitzhak Rabin, during his time he signed disengagement agreements with Syria and Egypt. On the international arena many African countries and the soviet bloc broke diplomatic relations.

Soon after the Lukid bloc defeated the Labor party and took over power and Menachem Begin became the leader. A peace treaty that entailed exchanging land for peace was signed with Egypt. The economy declined as the stock market collapsed and inflation shot up. The Lebanon War followed forcing Menachem to resign and he was succeeded by Yitzhak Shamir. Prime Minister Perez withdrew his army and the Lebanon War ceased in 1984. He also set the economy on track again by fighting inflation.

In 1988 Israel was hit by 39 missiles fired by Iraq in what was referred to as the Gaza War. The Labor party formed the Government again in 1992 and was led by Yitzhak Rabin, who had been a defense minister in the previous Government.

In 1994 Palestinians were granted autonomy in the Gaza strip and the West Bank. International relations improved and a peace agreement was reached with Jordan. Rabin was then assassinated in 1995.

A new system of polling called direct election was established in 1996 and Benjamin Netanyahu was elected Prime minister but he later lost in 1999 to Ehud Barak when the Government was dissolved. Ariel Sharon was elected In 2001, and in 2003 a coalition with the US Government invaded Iraq and captured Saddam Hussein. In 2005 he suffered health complications and Ehud Olmert took office.

Benjamin Netanyahu regained the seat in 2007 and is the current Prime minister. Though there is an office of the president the Prime minister holds executive powers.
