Issues Surrounding The 2011 Israeli Conflict With Palestine

By Bruce Bosshard

The 2011 Israeli conflict with Palestine is not a new phenomenon. There are many issues between these two groups. Majorly, the control of Jerusalem, Israeli settlements, security, and borders among others is some of the causes of conflict. Each side has its own view on these issues, and the rest of the world is polarized more or less on these two sides.

People different opinions about these things. Even the Palestinians and the Israelis are not always in agreement with their governments. Some people have suggested that if opinions polls were conducted, the respective governments would be shocked. The solutions favored by the majority of citizens are not always what the governments wants.

The fact that the conflict has been going on for a long time does not mean that there is no hope for its end. To this end, there are people who are working tirelessly to see that it is ended. Several groups are currently working on negotiations and peace deals to see if the two parties can solve their issues.

Countries from all over the world are involved in these negotiations, some more than others. The major players include the Us, Russia and countries from the Arab regions. The Us has always had major interest in the issue, though, and it seems that their interests are mixed up in this conflict.

For a very long time, America has had a special relation with Israel. American leaders, and presidents in particular, have always been interested in this disagreement. Although their specific opinions have at times swayed, the major position of America has not changed much over the years. Currently, President Obama favors the return to the borders in place before the 1967 war.

There is a great polarization on this issue, mainly between the Arab countries and the west. The latter seems to think that the west is more interested in helping Israel than securing peace. Recently, the American president was quoted as saying that the Israeli security is non negotiable. This is seen by some people as evidence of bias.

The current American president seems to stress the importance of the Palestinians getting their own state. In addition, he wants the two states to have secure borders, which should be recognized by both countries. He stresses that the Palestinians have a right to govern themselves, something they can only do if they live in their own state.

At the same time, the president wants the legitimacy of Israel to be recognized. This has always been a major issue, with the two neighbors each claiming to be legitimate states without recognizing each other. However, it is apparent to everybody that peace can only return to the region if the two countries recognize each other. This is one of the things that must happen if the 2011 Israeli conflict with Palestine is to be solved.
