Popular And Informative Political Blog Sites

By Yvette Pope

Political blog sites cover news and analysis from a wide range of ideological perspectives. Many of these pages are viewed by partisans searching for takes on the news that reflect their biases. However, some of the blogs are also accessed by web surfers looking for a specific angle on the news, for statistical predictions or for recent poll results.

One of the more popular go to pages is Politico. It provides brief descriptions of key events and is updated several times daily. Less well known but equally useful is Taegan Goddard's Political Wire page. Both of these blogs tend to present their material in fairly straightforward objective fashion. For brief snapshots of the day's happenings these are excellent starting points.

Individuals seeking right wing blogs will find Red State, Free Republic and Real Clear Politics. All three locations give conservative viewpoints or spins on current news and events. Free Republic is probably the more strident of the three, while the Real Clear page has articles written from very conservative to moderate perspectives. It also features a great aggregate average for polls of key Senate and House races as well as presidential match ups.

Persons looking for a left wing viewpoint can find themselves at home exploring Daily Kos, MyDD or Talking Points Memo. Daily Kos features front page articles and reader diaries. Talking Points Memo broke the Trent Lott story regarding his comments at Strom Thurmond's birthday party, which eventually helped bring Lott down as Senate majority leader.

Individuals hoping to predict the results of upcoming elections can find accurate models at both Nate Silver's left-leaning Five Thirty Eight.com and Scott Elliott's right-leaning Election Projection.com. Both sites predicted the 2008 electoral vote almost exactly. Each offers sophisticated statistical models for projection election outcomes.

Political blog sites vary in depth and quality, but many of the best blogs provide information or perspectives that are not adequately covered by the traditional media outlets. Read more about: political blog sites
