The Whole Politics History Of The State Of Israel

By B. Hardboss

Israel was declared an independent state in 1948. It became a homeland for Jewish people who were being oppressed in Europe. They had formed the Zionist movement which fought for the establishment of a permanent home for the Jews and it gained international support and so in 1948 Israel was declared a state and Jews from all over the world settled in it. This begins the Political History of Israel.

After independence David Ben-Gurion became the prime minister for 15 years and the Government was headed by the Labor Party for 29 years. Withing this period the country experienced a high growth rate in both population and economy.Levi Eshkol succeeded David in 1963 and formed the Government with the Herut movement. During this time the Six day War broke out which was against Egypt and Palestine. After Levi died in 1969 Golda Meir took over but when the Yom Kippur War broke out in 1973 he resigned.

In 1974 Yitzhak became prime minister. During his tenure many African countries and the Soviet Bloc broke off relations and agreement to disengage was brokered with Egypt and also Syria.

Menachem Begin took over power under the Lukid bloc that crashed the Labor party. In 1979 he reached a peace treaty with Egypt that they would exchange peace for land. During this time inflation went up and the stock market crashed. Begin was forced to resign by the Lebanon War and Yitzhak Shamir took office after him. The war lasted until 1984 when the Prime Minister Perez withdrew troops from Lebanon. He was also able to curb inflation and the economy became stable.

In 1988 the Gaza War broke out and Iraq fired 39 missiles into Israel. In 1992 the Labor party took over the Government again led by Yitzhak Rabin who had held the position of defense minister previously.

Palestine was awarded autonomy in 1994 in the West Bank and Gaza strip. Following this a peace treaty was signed with Jordan and international relations with other countries also improved. In 1995 Rabin was assassinated.

Netanyahu was elected using a new system of polling and additional records were signed with the Palestine but lost to Ehud Barak in 1999. Ariel Sharon became prime minister and later resigned due to health problems and Ehud Olmert took over.

The current prime minister is Benjamin Netanyahu who took office again in 2007. Though a president exists the prime minister holds more power.
