UK News Headlines In 2011 - What Have Been The Biggest Stories?

By Mark Walters

Once news broke that there was to be a Royal Wedding in 2011 it was enough to stir up the excitement of not only the UK population, but world wide as well. The Royal Wedding ceremony for Prince William and his wife Catherine Middleton did wonders to lift the spirits of the Country. It was a much needed change after having experienced a very difficult and costly winter. To extend the pleasure that a Royal Wedding can bring all it took was the marriage of Zara Phillips to Mike Tindall. Being the granddaughter of the Queen is all that it took to once again draw the attention of the wedding followers. Of course Mike Tindall being a avid Rugby athlete certainly helped to draw some additional attention.

It's unfortunate that such positive social adventures were followed by serious riots during the month of August 2011. It was a far cry from the jovial festivities of the weddings and one that is creating great concern amongst government officials. Although the government has resorted to relying on the expertise of a U.S.A. crime expert his findings indicate that merely making arrests will not put an end to the problem.

It would seem that these violent outbursts were stimulated by police actions involving a shooting. Even the seeking out of an expert opinion provided by a U.S. street crime expert did not provide any solutions. As a result of all of this instead of their being financial relief in store for the Country's budget it has resulted in an extra burden.

The year 2011 to date has not shown any indication of financial ease for the country. It is still reeling from the effects of a harsh weather beginning to the year. Unusually cold temperatures and large snow fall resulted in putting a great strain on the Country's finances. With the country not being exposed to severe weather such as this it simply was not financially prepared to handle the costs that this type of weather creates. UK headlines were quick to point out that the UK was simply not equipped to deal with this type of snowfall and the news provided ample coverage of the precarious conditions that the Country was dealing with. It would be fair to assume that concerns are rising when consideration is being given to what kind of weather conditions will prevail in the latter part of 2011 as winter sets in once again.

These issues may be a little easier to handle if there were viable solutions on the horizon for them, but there doesn't seem to be any indication of this. Although these three issues are significant they may be easier to deal with if they were all the issues that the UK were dealing with which is unfortunately not the case.
