Salt Lake City Gun Story

By Dan Schweiber

Most states allow its residents to carry a concealed weapon. Stringent standards are set before a concealed weapons permit can be obtained. Protesters of a Salt Lake City gun story were less than happy at the lax standards set by the state of Utah when it came to acquiring a permit. Most states do not allow convicted felons or certain misdemeanor offenders to apply. Some states even require residents to show proof of need such as imminent danger, before they can apply, and then mandatory training in the use of firearms must be taken. Utah did not require such training in the use of firearms.

Utah permits are recognized in thirty-one other states, making this a great resource for travelers and other businessmen to have. Safety when traveling is an important issue and makes individuals extremely vulnerable, so a concealed weapon can be an asset.

Restrictions are in place for applicants attempting to obtain a permit to carry in Utah. No one under the age of twenty-one can apply. An individual with prior convictions of felonies is cause for disqualification. No violent criminal convictions or drug and alcohol related crimes are allowable. Those convicted of domestic violence are prohibited from obtaining a permit. Mentally impaired and those with a criminal past of moral turpitude cannot apply.

A valid drivers license, a good photograph of yourself, a fingerprint card taken by trained personnel, and a weapons familiarity certificate are needed to obtain the concealed carry permit. The familiarity certificate must be signed by an instructor in order for it to be valid.

Certain fees do apply, and every applicant will be subjected to an FBI background check. Once the application is cleared, usually in sixty days, the license is valid for 5 years.

The controversy surrounding the Utah permit process has typically been about the absence of necessary gun training for the applicants. Utah previously did not require any proof that applicants knew how to use the weapon they were intending to carry, which makes it a popular place to obtain a license. Previously, you did not even have to leave the state you currently live in to get a Utah permit. Utah recently changed this policy, making it necessary for those who live out of state to show proof of concealed weapons permit in their own state. Instructors must also now possess a Utah concealed firearm permit.

Some say the controversy is all about money. With people flocking to Utah to obtain licensing, due to its lax policy, other states are losing money from their own residents. Others claim it is about safety. Who wants a bunch of untrained people walking around our streets, carrying concealed weapons? Most people would probably object to this.

The controversy about Salt Lake City gun story will no doubt continue, and states will probably begin to revoke the right to carry a Utah concealed weapons permit in their states, forcing its residents to obtain one from their own state, and receive training in the use of firearms.
