The history of Fort Myers Florida has to begin with the fact that it was originally built on a location that was twice chosen as a army fort by the U.S. army. The Seminole indians had also selected this location for their home and were happy to violently guard it as a place to situate their villages. Even before that, the Calusa indians had already built piles of shell and earth dwellings on the southern side of this river.
A glance of old maps that were made by the Army as far back as the 1830s tells a lot about Fort Myers and its history with proof of what continues to attract people to this area. The San Carlos Bay provides the gateway to the brook which broadens to two miles in the downtown area. It also provides great visibility in two directions and is served by many creeks which gave the Seminoles and Calusa an avenue of escape into the Everglades when required. Travel east, up the Atlantic coast, or south toward the Florida Keys and into the marshes close to Cape Sable. Fort Myers, Florida still boasts smashing attractions for those choosing to visit.
Fort Myers Cattle Kings and Confederate besiege runners began to call the area called the Caloosahatchee Stream valley and what would become Fort Myers Florida home once the Wars of Indian Removal was completed. For people that were willing to face the hardship of frontier life, managed to become wealthy by trading with the Union squaddies and the Seminoles who still lived there. One of those people who was pleased to risk all and his family was Captain Manual A. Gonzales who is famed for his efforts at carrying the post and supplies on his little sloop during times of war. He and his family claimed the Confederate garrison that was the first Fort Myers as home.
It was here at Fort Myers that the first trading post was set up and where beads, gunpowder, and tobacco were sold and bartered for with the friendly Seminoles who can stuffed with gator hides, deer, otter, and bobcat to trade for the products they wanted. Fort Myers, Florida has a rich history, and is proud of what it now has to offer.
Hamilton Diston who was a made industrialist from Philadelphia came to live in Fort Myers in 1881 with the pronouncement it was his try to "drain the meaningless swamp you folks call Everglades." He dredged right thru the very shallows where Indian canoes journeyed to connect the Caloosahatchee Stream with Lake Okeechobee to allow steamboats to make their way from Lake Okeechobee and Kissimmee Brook all of the way to the Gulf of Mexico and back.
On Aug 12, 1885, the town of Fort Myers, with its people living in just 349 was incorporated. In May 1887 Fort Myers seceded from Monroe County and became the new county seat for Lee County. Over time Fort Myers has become very hip with travellers and those who would like a winter home to shield them from the harsher winters further north. Famous past residents of Fort Myers Florida include Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.
