Putting your Money on American Made Products

By Ann Blair

When you buy something that was Made in the USA, you make a choice with your money. You choose the American made product over the foreign made competitors, and this choice has far-reaching effects. For starters, when it's clear to a store owner that people prefer the American products, they'll order more of them. You'll get a better selection of American goods and the factories around the country will have to step up their production. They might even have to hire new workers. Get the idea?

You can end up helping the American economy by spending money that you were already going to spend anyway. The only difference is not saving a couple dollars on the China version of the product. Don't forget the long term benefits of making the right choice. A home full of American made goods and furnishings is something you can work towards and be proud of.

The phrase "Made in America" is catching on and becoming popular. It has replaced the expensive designer item as the new American Status Symbol. That symbol is "Made in the U.S.A." Being a part of the national community is the new thing to show off. We help ourselves and each other when we work to increase the level of prosperity of the country.

Trade tariffs are a tricky proposal when trying to protect the competitive advantage of American companies. We can't forget that we would like to sell our wares in other countries, too, and we don't want a trade war. We can choose to purchase American made products instead of their foreign counterparts, and we'll send the message we want to send through the markets instead of the politicians.

Supporting American made products doesn't mean that you're turning a blind eye to the suffering of the workers in foreign nations. It's very much the opposite. If you were to buy a cheap foreign product that was made by underpaid workers in abusive conditions, you would be giving your financial support to that abusive system. If something doesn't reflect our values, we should instead place our support behind something that does.

Don't forget, when you're shopping, to keep the principle "Spend on America" in mind. It's important that you remember to compare the labels on the shelf. Look for the "Made in the USA," and if you're having trouble finding it in your local stores, talk to the owners. Tell them how important it is to you to be able to choose American made products.
