Queen Elizabeth's Trip To Eire Denotes Reconciliation

By Maurice F. Quilligan

In May, Queen Elizabeth II and the Prince of Edinburgh paid a historic visit to its neighbor at the invite of Irish President Mary McAleese. Queen Elizabeth's trip to Ireland, a four-day tour from May 17-20, 2011, was the 1st state visit to its neighbor in one hundred years. George V visited in 1911.

Ireland severed its ties with the British Commonwealth in 1949 but that did not end the argument. The fight for Northerly Eire waged on till 1998 and sporadic sectarian violence continued thereafter. It is with this under consideration that the visit by the royal couple symbolizes the end of a turbulent century and new beginnings.

In the four-day visit, the Queen paid A visit to the Garden of Remembrance where she laid a wreath to honor the Irish patriots who died fighting for independence. She gave a speech of reconciliation at Croke Park and visited Trinity College Library and looked at the Book of Kells. She made a trip to the Rock of Cashel in Tipperary and The English Market in Cork city.

Naturally, not every one cannot remember pieces of history but the visit by the Queen is an effort to further good relations and let the past ultimately be the past. There is much to be rancorous about on both sides. The slaughtering by the IRA of Lord Mountbatten, uncle of Prince Philip and godfather to the Prince of Wales in 1979, put any friendship between the countries at a remote distance. This visit proves that if time cannot heal all injuries, at least it moves folk and events forward.

The security operation was the most watchful Ireland has ever experienced. Nevertheless, an improvised explosive device was found on a bus in Maynooth and was successfully made safe through a controlled explosion before any harm was done. The royal partners continued the tour without incident. Notwithstanding protests, most folks welcomed the visitors.

Everybody knows the Queen has the greatest feelings for horses and horse racing so it was with all smiles that she paid a visit to the Irish National stud at Kildare. She owns many racehorses, some raised in Eire. Accompanied by the Irish Agricultural Minister, she was happy mingling with the horsey set, at home with many people she knew.

Today, England and Ireland are powerful trading partners. As neighbors, the connections between the two states contribute to a deepening relationship and may continue to do so in the coming years. What history and politics can't mend, business frequently can.

The Irish and the English have seen a violent century, beginning with the Easter Rising in 1916. For many , the memories will never die. But the latest generation is ready to let bygones by bygones and embrace unity. Queen Elizabeth's trip to Eire was symbolical of precisely that wish. The future is more significant than the past. The Queen has spoken. Now it's time for a new paradigm, one that serves the future and permits the wounds to heal.
